Alh. Umar Doguwa has made this known during a meeting with directors of agencies under the ministry at Gidan Murtala in Kano city.

“It is heartbreaking that in many of our schools the children sit on the bare floor to study. In some schools even the staff rooms do not have furniture at all. This obviously impedes teaching and learning. Such is unacceptable to any responsible government”.

Consequently, he instructed the directors to submit to his office details of furniture requirements of all public primary and secondary schools, assuring that as soon as the ministry receives the figures, the government will award contracts for the desks and chairs.

“From furniture, we will move to provision of infrastructure, teaching and non-teaching staff and educational materials, so that at the end of the day, glaring transformation will be witnessed in the education sector of Kano”, the commissioner asserted.

Stressing the need for better education outcomes in the state, Alh. Umar Doguwa pointed out that the administration’s plans for education cannot be achieved without the determination and cooperation of the directors and other key stakeholders.

He, therefore, urged the directors to assert their authority in their places of work, advising that they should not hesitate to reprimand any staff under them for wrongdoing.

“Any staff who is not willing to work should give way. There many out there looking for jobs so, I see no reason why we should excuse any errant education official”, he warned, adding that the directors must also pay attention to routine supervision of schools to ensure that government’s investment in education is not abused.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner met with officials of the state branch of Parents-Teachers Association, led by Alh. Sani Salisu Danhassan, to seek their cooperation towards achieving the mission and vision of the state government in the sector of education.
